What to Remember Before ‘The Bear’ Season 4: Syd’s Secret From Carmy, More

Season 4 of The Bear is picking up right where things left off — but where did we last leave Carmy and the rest of the characters?

The Bear, which premiered in 2021, explores the food industry through the lens of a talented chef named Carmy (Jeremy Allen White), who returned to Chicago shortly after his older brother Mikey’s (Jon Bernthal) death to take over their family sandwich shop, The Beef. After closing the local spot, Carmy and the employees reinvented the restaurant into The Bear, which has found success and failure.

Season 3 focused on the aftermath of Carmy, Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) and Richie’s (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) efforts to open The Bear within three months. The employees found it tough adjusting to the higher caliber of service, which led to unexpected rifts and questions about whether the staff could pull it off.

Carmy specifically found himself growing distant from Sydney, who was his partner since the show’s first season. His controlling behavior ultimately led Sydney to consider leaving The Bear for another opportunity.

The final scene in season 3 was of Carmy getting a potentially mixed restaurant review before a “To Be Continued” message. While there have been rumors that season 4 could be the show’s final run, the chairman of FX Content and FX Productions, John Landgraf, previously called it “accurate” when Deadline asked him in September 2024 if he still didn’t know whether there would be more seasons of the hit Hulu series.

Season 3, which started streaming June 2024 on Hulu, picked up after Carmy finally made his way out of the freezer. The employees at The Bear successfully soft-launched their new restaurant but that didn’t last long.

Carmy started to push The Bear to be bigger and better with a new menu every day to please possible food critics. The pressure got to be too much and the relationships between Carmy and his coworkers started to suffer.

The biggest issues were between Carmy and Sydney, who were not the team she wanted them to be. Then there was Richie, who found himself developing a passion for his work alongside Fak (Matty Matheson).

Season 3 showed Sydney having a panic attack as her issues with Carmy started to make her question her future at The Bear. She was also considering an offer from former Ever chef Adam Shapiro to be his new chef de cuisine, which Carmy didn’t know about in the season 3 finale.

The Chicago Tribune’s review was hanging over everyone’s head as the major deciding factor for the restaurant’s future.

Not much — if anything — has been teased about where season 4 will go. Carmy, Sydney, Richie and the rest of the employees at The Bear will likely aim to save the restaurant before it goes under. But can they?

There is also their personal lives to think about with past seasons touching on the difficult balance between working in the kitchen and not finding the time for anything else. Another major theme was mental health and breaking the cycle of generational trauma — with Carmy and Natalie’s (Abby Elliott) mom Donna (Jamie Lee Curtis) serving as a reminder for them of where they don’t want to end up.

While viewers don’t know what to expect, there is one guarantee. The Bear will likely find a way to nod at Taylor Swift — and bring out some surprising guest stars — in season 4.
