Season 2 of Nine Perfect Strangers is headed for a massive blow up during the finale — and episode 7 proves nothing is as it seems.
Warning: Spoilers below from Nine Perfect Strangers season 2, episode 7.
During the Wednesday, June 25, episode of the Hulu series, Dr. Helena’s (Lena Olin) final days prior to her death are revealed. Despite butting heads with his mother, Martin (Lucas Englander) agrees to “share responsibilities” with Masha (Nicole Kidman), whom fans remember he tracked down earlier this season to revive the Zauberwald retreat.

However, it becomes clear through flashbacks that Helena didn’t trust her son to successfully run the estate, which is why she really called upon Masha. On her deathbed, Helena tells Masha she wants her to “have” Zauberwald despite it being Martin’s birthright to carry on her legacy.
‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ Season 2 Premiere: Meet Masha’s 9 New Retreaters
Flash forward to present day, Martin is having a crisis of faith after Victoria (Christine Baranski) nearly died during her psychedelic trip one episode prior. While Victoria does wake up — and mends fences with her daughter, Imogen (Annie Murphy), after confirming her ALS diagnosis — Martin is spiraling.
Martin wonders if he is “capable of evil” before getting into a screaming match with David (Mark Strong), and claiming Masha manipulated his mom into taking over the retreat.

David has Masha’s back and throws a jab at Martin, telling him, “I think your mother knew exactly what she was doing. Her only mistake was letting you stay on here as Masha’s assistant because clearly even that job is above your pay grade.”

Martin then flees to his laboratory and takes a massive dose of mushrooms and begins to trip out before seeing Helena in a vision. Martin is a wreck thinking about how Masha has allegedly ruined his life and tainted his relationship with his late mother.

Masha, meanwhile, tells David she wants to give him a bigger psychedelic dose to help him meet their late daughter, Tatiana (Emílie Páclová). David, who still wants to invest and possibly steal Masha’s latest invention, agrees.

Instead of going on the trip with him, as promised, Masha takes off her drug device and begins her “grand finale” plan that revolves around David. Moments later, fireworks blast outside Zauberwald and all the guests are summoned together.
“What’s happening?” David asks after he finds himself in the middle of the group while under the influence of the drugs. “What is this a trial?”

Masha instructs him to have a seat, teasing it could be a trial or even a “sentencing,” but if he hasn’t done anything wrong there’s “nothing to worry about.” She then leans in close to David’s face and warns, “This won’t be easy, and it might be painful. But you will grow from this.”
The season 2 finale of Nine Perfect Strangers airs on Hulu Wednesday, July 2.
