Dermot Mulroney Said He and Ex Prima Were ‘Stealth Hollywood Couple’

Dermot Mulroney opened up about his very private marriage to Prima Apollinaare one year before filing for divorce.

Mulroney, 61, filed to end his marriage on Monday, June 23, Us Weekly confirmed via court documents. The pair were married for 14 years and share three kids together.

Prior to their split, Mulroney and Apollinaare worked together on We Are Family, the Fox game show that featured singers with celebrity relatives. Apollinaare took the stage to perform The Shirelles’ “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” during a February 2024 episode of the series, as contestants tried to guess who her celebrity connection was in the hopes of winning a cash prize.

Mulroney was revealed as her celebrity connection at the end of the episode. They then performed a duet of Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers’ “Islands in the Stream” together.

The actor reflected on what it was like to get the call to come do the show and perform with his now-estranged wife.

“It was such an amazing phone call to get that the show reached out to us,” Mulroney told Entertainment Weekly in February 2024. “They knew Prima’s music and put together that we are this sort of secret couple even though we’ve been together for 20 years. Kind of a stealth Hollywood couple. So it really works perfectly for this show. And then it was such an honor to be on a game show that helps other people and isn’t just fun and games, although we could not have had more fun.”

Apollinaare said she was equally as grateful to have done the show with Mulroney, as music was one of their common interests.

“We both like to do karaoke together and we both like music so much. It was actually, for me, it was really an amazing experience to be on television and singing,” she told the outlet. “Of course with my husband, I play with him all the time in the house. We all play instruments. We have harps, guitars, ukulele, pianos, you name it.”

“I’ve been singing since I was very little and music is my heart,” she continued. “So it was a great experience. They made it so easy for us. We had so much fun. I wish we could do it again.

Apollinaare also praised Mulroney’s performance on the show, calling him an “amazing singer.” He previously showed off his singing talent in the musical Mack and Mabel.

“Well, we’ve both been singers our whole life and although I’ve been obviously an actor and a musician in other ways in that I’ve played cello and scoring orchestras, Prima pretty much said it — we’re just a really musical family and have that in common,” Mulroney added. “But I’m not really known for my singing, so thanks for bringing that up. Mack and Mabel was one of the biggest challenges in my career. I just finished that, but hopefully we’ll be able to play that again.”

Despite gushing over the experience and their shared love of music, their marriage didn’t last. Mulroney cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for his split from Apollinaare. He requested spousal support and for the court to terminate her ability to receive financial support from him. Mulroney listed their date of separation as “TBD.”
