Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s Hairstylist Slams ‘American Love Story’ Hair

Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s real-life hairstylist agreed with fans — Sarah Pidgeon’s hair in American Love Story is too platinum.

Hairstylist Brad Johns set the record straight on what Carolyn’s hair should actually look like in Ryan Murphy’s upcoming series — which is set to be released in February 2026 — while chatting with Page Six on Monday, June 23.

Instead of the platinum locks that Pidgeon is sporting in teaser photos for the show, Johns suggested that the glam team went for more of a honey blonde look to look more like the late Carolyn, who died at age 33, in 1999, in a car accident with husband John F. Kennedy Jr. and her sister Lauren Bessette.

“I love Ryan Murphy. I mean, I live for him,” Johns said. “But there must be some kind of glitch with the costume people or the hair people, because it’s not right — it’s all white and burnt,” he admitted.

Johns continued, “Her hair was not white and it wasn’t burnt, and she hated the idea of having ashy hair — which I was totally against, too, and I never did it.” When Johns saw the first look photos, he told the publication his first thoughts were: “Oh my God, what am I gonna do?”

Instead of the platinum tresses, Johns explained that “Carolyn’s hair was darker at the bottom” with the middle of her strands being a “medium blonde” shade. Her money pieces were “brilliant gold pieces.”

Johns quipped, “Ash makes you look dead, unless you’re wearing a ton of makeup, and who wears a ton of makeup? It’s just wrong. Everything.” He added, “I got this gift from God — I know how women’s hair color should look.”

After seeing fans’ reactions to Pidgeon’s hair — and outfit, which fans also had issues with due to Carolyn’s iconic old money style — Murphy, 59, responded, claiming the actress’ wig might not even be in the final cut.

“That is not the wig we’re using, that is not the purse we’re using. Those are just things we had to show the studio,” he told Puck News.

The director continued, “It was a work in progress, but I released it, because sometimes you put things out and the paparazzi backs off, so your actors don’t feel attacked.” He even shared that a group of fashion bloggers will be coming into the studio and seeing Carolyn’s outfits before filming.

“I had no idea that people cared as much as they do, but I guess that’s a good thing,” he said.
