How Prince Louis Broke Royal Tradition With Trooping the Colour Outfit

Prince Louis is always marching to the beat of his own drum — and the young royal’s Trooping the Colour outfit proved that he has no issue when it comes trying new things.

Louis, 7, joined parents Prince William and Princess Kate Middleton along with siblings Prince George and Princess Charlotte on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the annual event on Saturday, June 14. The kids were all smiles as they interacted with royal watchers, who were quick to clock Louis’ outfit was different than years past.

The Trooping the Colour is an annual event that takes place each June to celebrate the current monarch’s birthday, even though King Charles III’s actual birthday is in November.

For Saturday’s event, the youngest son of William and Kate, both 42, showed up in pants. Louis seemed to take after his older brother, George, 11, which was a departure from previous celebrations whenLouis donned shorts and high socks. This year, he and George matched in navy suits paired with red ties.

Generally, young royal family members wear the shorts and high socks combination ahead of their 8th birthdays. It seems Louis is breaking tradition by doing it one year earlier. (Louis will turn 8 in April 2026.)

Louis seemed to be following in George’s footsteps all day. Photos showed the brothers smiling while riding in the same carriage on Saturday as royal watchers looked on. The duo continued to grin while waiting for the military flypast on the Buckingham Palace balcony. Louis, in typical fashion, got a laugh while mimicking his grandfather Charles’ wave to the public.

William and Kate’s kids have been making headlines for their Trooping the Colour appearances in recent years. Louis, for one, made his debut on the balcony in 2019. He went viral at the event two years later when he was photographed holding his hands over his ears as planes flew overhead.

Princess Diana’s astrologer Debbie Frank referred to Louis as someone “disinclined to follow the herd” during an April 2024 interview with Hello! Magazine, a trait which has hardly gone unnoticed over the years.

“As the Prince and Princess of Wales’s third child coming after Prince George, the heir, and Princess Charlotte, the spare, Louis has some poetic license to fulfill a rather different life purpose than his siblings,” she shared of William and Kate’s youngest. “Which is just as well, as he wants to do things his way. And he has a willful streak.”
