How Taylor Swift’s ‘Invisible String’ Song Applies to TVD’s Candice, Steven

The Vampire Diaries’ Candice King made a rare comment about how Taylor Swift‘s “Invisible String” song applies to her love story with now-fiancé Steven Krueger.

During the Thursday, June 12, episode of the “Scrubbing In” podcast, King, 38, recalled reconnecting with Krueger, 36, after she initially forgot crossing paths with him while they were both starring in The Vampire Diaries universe.

“His joke is that this is just my long game as a fangirl because I love Yellowjackets. So Steven worked on The Originals, which was a spinoff of The Vampire Diaries. So there were times when we probably lived on the same block or were in the same rooms,” she noted. “And we would just say, ‘Oh, hi.’ But there had never been a conversation.”

King “did not register who he was” until later.

“He was very much in his world. I was in my world. It truly wasn’t until a couple of years ago,” she recalled. “I had just gone to a convention and our mutual coworkers were like, ‘Krueger is coming to dinner.’ I was like, ‘Who?’”

At the time, Candice was going through a divorce from Joe King and wasn’t looking for romance, adding, “I was single and on a trip and just trying to catch up with friends. I was definitely not single and ready to mingle.”

She continued: “Then he gets there and I finally was like, ‘You’re Coach Ben!’ And he’s like, ‘Yeah. We also worked together and know each other.’ But it wasn’t until another year or two where we ended up going on our first date and got to know each other better.”

When asked whether it was an “invisible string” moment, Candice replied, “The invisible string was very invisible until it was very visible.”

Fans of Swift’s music are very familiar with the Folklore song “Invisible String,” which references a folk myth about a red thread of fate tying two soulmates together.

“Were there clues I didn’t see? And isn’t it just so pretty to think,” Swift, 35, sang on the 2020 track. “All along there was some / Invisible string / Tying you to me?”

Candice, for her part, elaborated on how she reconnected with Krueger at exactly the right time.

“He says that we’ve met. He remembers me multiple times. But I was married. He also was in long-term relationships. So there truly was no recollection,” she added. “But he’s like, ‘I remember meeting you at a read-through and in the hallway at work.’ I was in a different space and we ended up just getting to know each other later. It’s funny though, when the light turns on, it’s just there.”

Candice rose to fame playing Caroline Forbes on TVD from 2009 to 2017. Krueger, meanwhile, played the role of Josh Rosza in The Vampire Diaries spinoff, The Originals. During her time on The CW series, Candice started dating Joe. The pair, who got married in 2014, expanded their family with daughters Florence in 2016 and Josephine in 2020.

Us Weekly broke the news in May 2022 that Candice filed for divorce from Joe. She subtly launched her romance with Krueger in 2023. After several years of dating, the couple announced their engagement earlier this year.

“I think 38 just might be my favorite year yet 🎂 ♥,” Candice wrote via Instagram in May. “A couple of weeks ago @stevenakrueger gave me the best gift of all when he asked me to marry him. The privilege of getting older is much sweeter knowing I get to share it with you Steven. Thank you for asking me to dance through life with you. And thank you to everyone for the kind birthday wishes.”
